In an unfortunate incident at Ujjain’s Mahakal Temple on Monday morning, a fire erupted in the inner sanctum during the ‘bhasma aarti’ ceremony, leaving 13 priests injured. Ujjain Collector Neeraj Kumar Singh confirmed the occurrence and initiated a magisterial inquiry. Eyewitnesses suggested that the fire may have been sparked by the throwing of ‘gulal’ inside the sanctum, potentially igniting chemicals within the colored powder. Among the injured is Sanjay Guru, the chief priest of the Bhasma Aarti, with nine individuals in critical condition transferred to Indore for further treatment. Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma indicated that initial investigations point towards ‘gulal’ being thrown onto a priest, causing it to fall onto a lamp and ignite.
Union Minister Amit Shah and Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav have expressed concern and assured support for the injured in Mahakal fire tragedy.
