Kerala is currently grappling with a mumps outbreak, with 190 cases reported on March 10 alone, as confirmed by officials from the Union Health Ministry. The National Centre for Disease Control has been alerted about the situation.
Last month, the state witnessed over 2,500 cases. This viral infection, which predominantly affects children and young adults, has also been prevalent in various other states recently, including Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, sparking concerns among parents.
It is caused by the paramyxovirus, spreads through direct contact or airborne droplets from the upper respiratory tract of infected individuals.
While it often resolves on its own, it can lead to complications such as encephalitis, deafness, or orchitis in young men. Preventive measures include staying hydrated, getting adequate rest, and using cold compresses to alleviate swelling. Currently, there’s no specific treatment for mumps, but managing symptoms through fluid intake, rest, and soft foods is recommended.
The Indian Academy of Pediatrics advocates for the mandatory MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccination to prevent the occurrence of mumps. This vaccine, typically administered in childhood, provides protection for a certain period against the virus.
Incubation Period: It typically has an incubation period of two to four weeks after exposure to the virus.
Symptoms: The onset often begins with low-grade fever, malaise, headache, and loss of appetite, lasting approximately 3 to 4 days. Subsequently, individuals may experience painful swelling around the ears due to inflammation of the parotid glands. This swelling can cause discomfort in the cheek and jaw areas, persisting for about 7 to 14 days.
Signs : The most recognizable sign is the painful swelling of the parotid glands, which are located on both sides of the face, leading to a swollen appearance.
Preventive Measures : Ensure adequate fluid intake, get sufficient rest, apply cold compresses, consume a soft diet, maintain good hygiene practices, and consider vaccination with the MMR vaccine.
