Maharashtra govt. Renaming Proposal Details

Stations to be Renamed: Curry Road, Sandhurst Road, Cotton Green, Dockyard Road, and Kings Circle stations on the Central Railway network.

Proposed Names: Lalbaug, Dongari, Kalachowki, Mazgaon, and Tirthkar Parshwanath stations. Marine Lines, Charni Road, and Mumbai Central on the Western Railway’s network could be renamed as Mumbadevi, Girgaon, and Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth stations.

Counterargument by Bharat Gothoskar

City chronicler Bharat Gothoskar argues against the renaming, pointing out that not all names have colonial associations and some have historical significance.

Previous Renamings by Maharashtra Govt.

– In 2017, Elphinstone Road was renamed Prabhadevi station.

– Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in the same year.

While there is support for the renaming from some quarters, others argue against it, citing historical significance and lack of colonial connections in some cases.
