The Supreme Court granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh on Tuesday, questioning the Enforcement Directorate’s actions in his case. The court raised concerns over Singh’s prolonged detention without trial or evidence recovery of alleged bribes amounting to ₹2 crore. Despite the Enforcement Directorate’s claims of a substantial sum, the court found no evidence to support this.
Court Questions Enforcement Directorate
The court directed Additional Solicitor General SV Raju to confer with the Enforcement Directorate and determine if Singh’s custody was warranted at this stage. Ultimately, Singh was released after the Enforcement Directorate stated it did not seek custody.
Observations on Case Evidence
The court noted that Dinesh Arora, an accused turned approver, did not implicate Singh in his initial statements. Singh had been arrested based on Arora’s statements. He had been in Delhi’s Tihar Jail since October on money laundering charges linked to an alleged liquor policy scam.
Bail Relief Granted
Singh’s earlier bail pleas, including those in the Delhi High Court, were rejected. However, the Supreme Court finally granted bail. The bench, comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Dipankar Datta, and Prasanna B Varale, allowed Singh’s release during the trial period, with terms and conditions to be determined by the trial court.
Political Implications
Significantly, Singh can now participate in political activities, potentially impacting the AAP’s campaign efforts in the lead-up to the elections, where they may face a shortage of prominent leaders.
