The placement season at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay this year has been underwhelming amidst an economic slowdown. Around 36% of the graduates, totaling 712 out of approximately 2,000 registered students, are yet to secure employment.
IIT students are expressing concerns as job offers have declined by 30% compared to previous years, according to a report. Dheeraj Singh, an alumnus and founder of the Global IIT Alumni Support Group, noted that 35.8% of students have remained without placements in the current season.
Attributing Factors Behind Slow Placement Drive
Dheeraj Singh attributed the slow placement drive to the “global economic meltdown.” He mentioned the institute’s struggle in attracting companies to the campus.
Challenges and Errors in Placement Process
A significant portion of companies offering employment this year were from the domestic market. Additionally, students from the computer science and engineering branch, typically easily placed, did not achieve 100% placement among those registered.
Criticism Towards Focus on High Salary Packages
Criticism was also directed towards the institute’s focus on high salary packages, with less emphasis on average student salaries. There’s a call for support systems for unplaced students facing stress and anxiety.
Call for Increased Support for Unplaced Students
The professor urged the institute to create a support system for approximately 700-750 unplaced students left without adequate placement support.
